Full Abstract
With only 18 months from ground break to opening day the Newport Aquarium was one of the fasted constructed public aquariums to date. The initial project’s $42 million was an urban revitalization with hopes set to boost economic and tourism growth to aging waterfront of Northern Kentucky. Since its opening, in May of 1999, the Newport Aquarium has seen more than 15 million guests, become a community treasure and promoted its mission to captivate, educate and advocate conservation. Newport Aquarium has greater than 90 exhibits from fresh, brackish, saltwater and the occasional terrestrial discipline, rounding the facility out at just under 1 million gallons of water on site. The aquarium has highest regard for water quality and showcases a unique culture that carefully balances communication, responsibility, accountability and respect. Some of the aquarium’s exhibitry accolades are its 385,000 gallon Surrounded by Sharks exhibit which highlights (7) species of elasmobranchs including the rare Shark Ray (Rhina ancylostoma), Mighty Mike our resident 14ft, 800+ lbs. American Alligator, Thunder our 155 lbs Alligator Snapping Turtle and Penguin-Palooza exhibit with 40 plus penguins representing (5) sub-Antarctic species. |

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is world renown for many reasons. As the second oldest zoo in the nation, founded in 1873, its history is rich and diverse. Whether it be its world class animal collection or its amazing botanical garden, the CZBG is a jewel in its ultra-urban setting. This presentation will focus on the role of the zoo in conservation throughout its history. Like most in the industry, the focus traditionally had been in field conservation projects half way across the world. While those efforts are still a part of the story, there is now a strong focus on conservation in our own community. And that conversation starts with how the facility is operated. Hear about how the zoo is making an impact on resource conservation and the critical role that LSS plays in the efforts. |
