An Introduction to Nitrification in Aquaria
Dr. Timothy Hovanec, Dr Tim’s Aquatics Watch Video (Login required) Full Abstract
Nitrification is the conversion of ammonia to nitrite and then the nitrite to nitrate by bacteria. While the definition is simple the process, the organisms involved and the factors that positively and negatively affect nitrification are varied and complex. This is due to the fact that while the process is biological in nature it depends greatly on the ambient physical and chemical water conditions. This talk will introduce the nitrification process, the microorganisms responsible and how the process and organisms are affected by the ambient water conditions. |
Full Abstract
A thorough knowledge of ion exchange is essential to the successful management of aquarium systems. Ion exchange occurs both within the aquarium’s inhabitants and within the aquarium system. Understanding what ions are present and how they affect your aquariums’ water quality is essential to maintaining the quality of life of the inhabitants within the aquarium. This correct balance of common ions is obtained in the water column through the use of the aquarium life support system and properly calculated chemical additions. |
