Full Abstract
Animals all have sets of skills for which their proficiency level is high. By modifying the challenge presented in the captive environment we can provide opportunities for animals to utilize and strengthen these skills. Presenting appropriate challenge through enrichment allows animals to express intrinsically motivated behaviors by integrating physical and cognitive skills.

This workshop will focus on applying principles relevant to challenge to the design and delivery of enrichment.  As an introduction, there will be a short talk on developing a systematic approach to the design and evaluation of enrichment items that provide appropriate challenge. Key elements include:
 
  • Identification of the skill set we wish to challenge.
  • Outlining clear goals related to the execution of the skills of interest.
  • Incorporating direct feedback to animals.
  • Planning for incremental increases in challenge
  • Assessment of performance: when it is working and when not?
 

The remainder of the workshop will be interactive, with participants working in groups to develop challenging enrichment protocols using a scenario-based approach.  Groups will be given specific information about the animal(s) for which they are designing, and will apply the systematic process outlined above to develop their devices and implementation protocol their proficiency level is high. Groups will present their ideas and receive feedback on their designs.
