International Bird Rescue (IBR) has extensive experience being able to maintain safe and functional clinics during an outbreak of an infectious disease. In this presentation we will discuss how to safely operate during animal and human disease outbreaks. We will cover considerations that need to be made as well as procedures and tips for putting together a functional standard operating procedure. Topics will include proper personal protective equipment, quarantine zones, cleaning/disinfection protocols, staffing considerations, and triage decisions. Without proper biosecurity measures, infections can spread quickly. In 2021 the centers cared for 6,242 birds between our two wildlife centers in California while operating safely during the COVID-19 pandemic and responding to oil spills and other crisis events. International Bird Rescue has also continued to operate during a Newcastle Disease outbreak. Other diseases covered will be Poxvirus and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. |
