Techniques in Seadragon Handling Kristen Aanerud-Smith, SeaWorld Orlando Watch Video (Login required) Full Abstract
It can be a very scary thing to catch up seadragons in your collection. I will talk about different handling techniques for both weedy and leafy seadragons that will make things easier and run smoother. These techniques are important if needing to assist feed your animals, hand feed your animals or any other procedure which involves catching up your dragons. I will discuss several cases that we have had in recent years where handling was involved and things learned along the way. |

Seadragons Down Under: Observations from Above and Below the Water
Marisa Avila, Steinhart Aquarium Watch Video (Login required) Full Abstract
Seadragons have rarely been observed in their native habitat by North American aquarists, and few have bred them successfully. In order to support leafy and weedy seadragon breeding efforts at the Steinhart Aquarium, two aquarists received funding for a 12 day trip to Melbourne, Australia to observe the captive seadragon breeding program at Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, and to visit the two seadragon suppliers in the area, Pang Quong and Steve McLeod. In addition, we conducted dives to observe weedy seadragons in the wild, which resulted in the acquisition of valuable information regarding their behavior and habitat. Through photos and video, this presentation will share our observations of these facilities, and wild weedy seadragons off the south eastern Australian coast. |
Seadragons at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps - Past, Present and Future
Leslee Matsushige, Birch Aquarium at Scripps Watch Video (Login required) Full Abstract
The Birch Aquarium at Scripps has worked with sea dragons since 1995. We inaugurated our seadragon propagation program in 2012, with the building of a room to focus on their reproduction. We are presently looking toward our future with seadragons and are in progress of designing an expanded exhibit to open in Summer 2019. |
Leafy Seadragon Courting Based on Moon Phases
Shawn Garner, Florida Aquarium Watch Video (Login required) Full Abstract
Purpose of research- overall goal is to breed leafy seadragons in a managed care setting, to create a method for breeding that can be duplicated across facilities, to discover if some behaviors are better indicators of breeding success than others, to create a baseline of knowledge even if breeding is not seen or successful. How the problem was studied- time-lapse video was taken every day, using the video a variety of data sets will be taken by multiple researchers, the data sets will be analyzed to show trends overtime This study provides an in depth look at the behavior of a mated leafy seadragon pair in managed care from the October to March, the 2016 breeding season. Daily time-lapse videos was taken and analyzed to plot behavior as a function of the phases of the moon. The behaviors examined are position in the water column, time spent together and apart, number of known mating “interactions” witnessed, and the receptiveness of the male (as quantified by the redness of the tail in color and percentage of the tail that is red). |
